Society and human relations had been an important subject of philosophy since the ancient times, but it was in the 19th century when first attempts of applying scientific tools took place. The father of the new science was Auguste Comte (1798-1857), although some date it back to the 14th century to one Ibn Khaldun from North Africa. Social thinkers like Karl Marx or Herbert Spencer were also very important founders of Sociology, establishing such subgenres of the science like for example the sociology of conflict. Other notable names include Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, Konrad Znaniecki and other classics. Their works had impact not only on Sociology itself, which later grew on to be a major science, but also on academic fields like anthropology and economy.
