The Hololiturgy revolutionized the idea of what a mass religious experience should look like, replacing simple acts like singing and dancing together with a theatrical show that carried the right content and emotions. In a Deodrome, a person in charge (usually an AI with artistic abilities) took on the role of the preacher, stimulating the followers not just with words but with the whole spectrum of sensual input. A typical Deodrome could accommodate thousands at a time; it could be much more if remote spectators were added, but in many Civilizations physically being in the Deodrome was significant (which was peculiar in itself, since most people in the Diamond Age seldom left their immediate surroundings). Its efficiency in providing an outlet for mystical needs of the masses was much more successful than any facility before; as one enthusiast put it to words, it was "a perfect blend of a Temple, a Movie Palace, and a family festival". Needless to say, the Deodromes also became infamous among those who perceived it as yet another form of the "opiate for the masses".
