Soon after the developement of the automobile, an armored car was produced in 1902. Experiments with armor and armament gradually led to the developement of the tank in 1917, but light armored vehicles remained in service and developement alongside them. Wheeled armored cars have better speed and range than tracked vehicles, so they're useful for reconaissance. Many of these vehicles were especially designed for this role, such as English Rolls-Royce armored cars of WWI, German Pumas of WWII or US Strykers of the US-Iraqui wars; with innumerable civilian cars available in the second half of 20th century and later, the practice of arming and armoring them for military use was also not uncommon, especially in poorer countries (for example, the so-called "technicals" of early 21st-century Middle-east).
