The Dreadnoughts were designed to be the ultimate underwater vessels, capable of achieving total domination by sheer firepower. In order to achieve that goal it was necessary to devise a number of completely new whole branches of technology, such as containment microfields or reverse-weaved nanful coating. The result is a ship that not only can level a city with one salvo of its Doomsday Gun, but also seems to stretch laws of physics in terms of durability, maneuverability, and stealth. Dreadnoughts prove to be surprisingly powerful in the age of space cruisers and automated war drones, even if they seemed a little old-fashioned in terms of unit type - after all it's still only a seaborne vessel (albeit a very, very powerful one).
