Chariot is the oldest form of horse carriage, used both in war and peace by many ancient Civilizations. Using a spoked wheel, they allowed fast movement of troops when horses were still not large enough to ride them, except by units like scouts or horsebowmen. The chariot had many different shapes and forms, varying wildly between various civilisations that employed them, like Hittites, Indo-Iranians, Persians, Greeks, Celts, or the Chinese; some of them were open in front, some had war scythes attached to its wheels. The chariot allowed advanced battle tactics: for instance, Julius Caesar himself praised British charioteers for their expertise and ingenuity in using chariots against enemies.
