As the artillery technologies and early Robotics progressed, by the 22nd century even the most advanced variants of Troop Ships were fair game for even relatively weak attacks. A new doctrine for massed troop transport was desperately needed, and so Russian engineers came with plans for a completely automated large undersea unit, nicknamed the Kraken. Trying to balance transport and defensive capabilities of the vessel, the Russians leaned strongly towards the latter, equipping the Kraken with formidable weapon systems; since there was no actual crew onboard, there was still plenty of room for transport. Foreign analysts didn't have much faith in the Kraken at first, expecting it to fail like most hybrid designs; however, after seeing its performance in the Russian-Brazillian war, they changed their mind very quickly (especially in Brazil) and started recommending copying the design. Kraken proved to be a well-balanced, sturdy, efficient design with a professional attitude to boot, and it became the new template for any sea transport.
