Using mezotechnological circuitry woven into the patient's brain, scientists of the early 22nd century developed methods for creating the perfect MMI (Mind-Machine Interface). While at first used in various military and scientific applications, later versions of the machines provided virtual worlds that gave users simulated sensory experience; when used for incarceration, such worlds were altered appropriately. The new type of global network developed using this technology, known as Sensorium, not only provided the population with infinite virtual environments to explore, but also had a significant impact on science proliferation, as testing theories and building models was easy using the virtual tools - although some suggest it mostly helped promoting pseudoscience, or scientific fantasies at best.
