Throughout history Civilizations have often pillaged their conquered enemy, stealing valuables, destroying places of worship, and leaving behind smoldering ruins. Although most armies engaged in this ruthless act, the barbarians are famous for their rampant looting. The Vandals and the Visigoths both pillaged Rome, signaling the collapse of the Roman Empire. Centuries later, armies continued in this tradition, with the Nazis, Imperialist Japan, Communist Soviets, and Americans pillaging their way through the 20th century.
